C'est à Pigeon que fut construite la première église de la paroisse, que se trouvait à l'origine le bourg de Bouillante, fondé en 1636 par les premiers colons de la Compagnie des Iles. Son nom provient des sources d'eau chaude qui jaillissent ici et témoignent du volcanisme actif de l'île.
